Toronto Dinner Meeting / Webinar

As a resource for Canadian regulatory professionals, CAPRA is committed to offering opportunities for all of its members to network and to learn with other co-workers, industry leaders and key government officials. For our quality programming to be readily accessible for all CAPRA members, we are happy to launch a new format for our upcoming Dinner Meeting, which will now include a live webinar! This means that you can either attend the Dinner Meeting in person, and continue to benefit from networking with regulatory professionals in-person, OR you may now opt to join the webinar and view the meeting directly from your computer. This new format is another option for CAPRA members to keep pace with a dynamic regulatory environment.

For the upcoming months, the venue will alternate between Toronto and Montréal.

Dinner Meeting Title: Health Canada’s Special Access Program

Description: The Special Access Programme (SAP) has a mandate to provide access to non-marketed drugs to practitioners treating patients with serious or life-threatening conditions when conventional therapies have failed, are unsuitable, are unavailable or offer limited options.  The SAP provides manufacturers of pharmaceutical products with the authority to sell a specific quantity of a drug; thereby granting access to a drug which cannot otherwise be sold or distributed in Canada.  The SAP also has a role in facilitating emergency preparedness and response activities at the national, provincial and municipal level to allow drugs for public or military health emergencies.

Currently, SAP receives and processes approximately 14,000 requests annually; most of these are processed within 24 hours of receipt. It is clear that Canadians with medical needs want improved and accelerated access to treatment options. Health Canada is proposing updates to the SAP regulations, electronic systems, operational processes, and client services to facilitate a modern and predictable access to unauthorized medication to treat serious or life-threatening conditions.
