Description: Certificates of Supplementary Protection provide up to two years of patent-like protection for drugs containing new medicinal ingredients and new combinations of medicinal ingredients. This presentation will provide an overview of the Certificate of Supplementary Protection regime in Canada, including the application process and Health Canada’s eligibility assessment.

Michelle Ciesielski is the Manager of the Office of Patented Medicines and Liaison within the Health Products and Food Branch of Health Canada. She oversees a dedicated group of scientific, legal and program support staff in administering the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations, data protection and the new Certificate of Supplementary Protection scheme. Prior to joining the federal public service in 2005, Michelle obtained a J.D. from the University of Western Ontario and a B.Sc. in Biochemistry with specialization in Biotechnology from the University of Waterloo.
